Self-Defense

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was a style that was developed in the tough street of Brazil. with the Gracie Family. We train under the same theories and techniques used and followed by Helio Gracie and his sons, Rorion Gracie, Relson Gracie, Rickson Gracie, Rolker Gracie, Royler Gracie, and Royce Gracie.

Think about it 90 percent of street altercations end up on the ground. And if you are striking it is hard enough to strike the head much less a point the size of a quarter to get that instant knock out. You have to also assume that your attacker is bigger stronger faster then you are. Other wise they wouldn’t be looking for you as a victim. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu also know as Brazilian Jiu-jitsu uses balance and leverage giving the smaller weaker person the ability to survive and defeat a larger more aggressive attacker.

Avoiding a Street altercation is a lot easier when you see your attacker coming toward you, any training from track to any sport can help you there. But when you don’t see them coming, when they sneak up behind you and you are already grabbed, or being being choked what striking martial arts will help you? Gracie Jiu-Jitsu takes the defense from the 2nd and 3rd move to escape and remove yourself from the attacker’s grasp.

Now are there reasons not to go to the ground, a big yes. But if and when you are taken there, you will have the tools to survive. And I have to say probably the hardest person to take to the ground are people who are well versed in ground fighting techniques.

And yes there is striking taught in Gracie Jiu-jitsu but it is taught to where you can strike your attacker when and where they cant strike back at you. Using positioning and control you don’t have to put yourself at risk when you have to strike back. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a compete self-defense style, it isn’t always ground fighting techniques.

Bruce Lee said it best “don’t box a boxer don’t wrestler a wrestler” meaning learn to take it where the attacker don’t want to go. We feel that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu will give you the tools to do what you need to do to survive a street altercation.

There are no paper tigers at our academy many of our instructors are willing and able to prove what we teach works in Mixed Martial Arts Matches, and even though we know that is a sport and not competently a real fight, it is as close as you can get. We have a success rate of 85% in the cage and have several successful professional fighters who train and teach at our academy. But we do this in a professional respectful family atmosphere.
