The Sons of Hélio Gracie: The Men Who Carried the Legacy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu cannot be told without discussing the Gracie family. At the center of this story stands Hélio Gracie, the man who refined the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu and demonstrated how leverage, timing, and technique could allow a smaller person to defeat a larger opponent.

While Hélio Gracie played a crucial role in developing the art, the worldwide spread of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came largely through the efforts of his sons. Each son contributed in a unique way—some through competition, some through teaching, and others by introducing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to new countries and audiences.

Beginning with the first son raised in Hélio’s household, the following men helped carry the Gracie legacy across the world.

Rolls Gracie (1951–1982)

Rolls Gracie holds a unique place in the Gracie family history. Although he was the biological son of Carlos Gracie, Hélio’s older brother, he was taken into Hélio’s home as an infant and raised as his own son. Because he joined the household before Hélio’s own children were born, Rolls grew up as the first son in the home and was raised side by side with the rest of the family.

Rolls quickly became known for his incredible athleticism and adventurous spirit. While he respected the traditional teachings of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he was also curious about other grappling arts. Rolls studied wrestling, judo, and sambo, bringing new ideas into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training.

This willingness to cross-train helped modernize the art. Many techniques and training methods common today were influenced by the innovations Rolls introduced.

Rolls was also an extremely influential instructor. Many legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners trained under him, and his students helped shape the next generation of the sport.

Sadly, Rolls Gracie died in a hang-gliding accident in 1982 at just 31 years old. Despite his short life, he remains one of the most influential figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history.

Rorion Gracie (1952– )

Rorion Gracie was instrumental in bringing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the United States. Born in 1952, he moved to California where he began teaching the art and demonstrating its effectiveness.

Rorion became widely known as the co-creator of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The early UFC events were designed to showcase the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu against other martial arts styles.

Through these events, millions of people around the world were introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time. Rorion’s work played a major role in launching the global growth of the art.

Relson Gracie (1953– )

Relson Gracie was known for his fierce competitive spirit and dedication to traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. During the 1970s and 1980s he was a dominant competitor in Brazil, winning numerous tournaments.

Relson later moved to Hawaii, where he helped build one of the strongest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu communities in the United States. His influence continues through the many students he has trained over the years.

Relson is also known for preserving many of the traditional teachings of his father, emphasizing discipline, respect, and technical precision.

Rickson Gracie (1958– )

Rickson Gracie is widely regarded as one of the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners of all time. Known for his calm demeanor and technical perfection, Rickson developed a reputation as a nearly unbeatable competitor.

Throughout his career, Rickson competed in numerous matches and Vale Tudo fights, earning an extraordinary record and the respect of martial artists around the world.

Rickson has also emphasized the deeper aspects of Jiu-Jitsu training, including breathing, balance, and connection between mind and body. His teachings focus not only on fighting ability but also on personal development.

Royler Gracie (1965– )

Royler Gracie became one of the most successful sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors of his generation. Despite being relatively small in stature, he defeated many larger opponents through technique, speed, and strategy.

Royler won multiple world championships and became one of the most decorated competitors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history.

In addition to competition, Royler has played a major role in teaching and spreading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu internationally through seminars, academies, and instructional materials.

Royce Gracie (1966– )

Royce Gracie became one of the most famous members of the Gracie family due to his success in the early Ultimate Fighting Championship tournaments.

At UFC 1 in 1993, Royce shocked the world by defeating much larger opponents using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. His victories demonstrated that leverage and technique could overcome size and strength.

Royce went on to win several early UFC tournaments, helping ignite a worldwide interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts.

Robin Gracie (1969– )

Robin Gracie played an important role in spreading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu throughout Europe. After moving to Spain, he established academies and trained thousands of students.

His work helped build one of the strongest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu communities in Europe and introduced the art to many practitioners who might otherwise never have encountered it.

A Family That Changed Martial Arts

The sons of Hélio Gracie helped transform Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from a relatively small martial art practiced primarily in Brazil into a global phenomenon.

Some achieved fame through competition, others through teaching, and others through innovation and promotion. Together they carried forward the teachings of Hélio Gracie and helped spread Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to every corner of the world.

Today millions of people practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and much of that growth can be traced back to the dedication and influence of the sons of Hélio Gracie.
